Summer Reading Program

The doors to summer vacation will soon open wide and children (as well as teachers by the way) will jostle each other to get out and away from the schoolroom!

Plans have already been made and schedules madly juggled so that every kind of physical activity can be pursued; we wouldn't want our children to miss out on anything! Trips to the beach or Disney World are planned, visits to Grandma's house marked on the calendar (especially Grandma's). And what about the baseball and basketball clinics, the camping trips, the ... and the list goes on.

But quieter pursuits should be included too.

Should we allow our children to put away the better part of their brains, carefully pack them away in their empty desks, as we put away winter clothes, to be brought out later on, in the fall, musty from lack of use? Of course not!

Our goal at CCS is to add reading to student's summer activities. They may not like the idea initially but as the years go by and college looms closer and closer, they will be glad of having acquired those reading skills; hopefully they may even have learned to love reading. Unfortunately many children, left on their own, would very probably not crack a book all summer and it falls to the parents to make reading a aprt of their child's daily summer routine.

The 5th grade Latin students learned a famous Latin quotation this year, "Abeunt studia in mores" - pursuits pass over into habits (Ovid). This simply means that what you spend your time doing, on a regular basis, whether by choice or not, will soon become a habit. What better habit can we instill in our children than that of reading ... not comic books, not picture books, but something more edifying and challenging, something to grow on.

Below are links to lists of books students will be required to read during the summer. For slow or unenthusiastic readers it might be a good idea to figure out the total number of pages to be read then assign your child a designated number of pages to be read daily.
